College of Westchester Charitable Foundation Honors Mayor Delfino at Scholars Event and Establishes Scholarship In The Mayor’s Name

White Plains--On October 28th, 80 CW faculty, staff and friends filled the TD Bank on Central Avenue in White Plains for the annual CW Foundation Scholarship event and silent auction, at which Mayor Delfino was honored for his fine work and tremendous support of the college. The college recently established a Mayor Delfino scholarship, to be awarded yearly to a graduate of White Plains High School who is currently attending The College of Westchester.

Present at the event, among many local dignitaries, were Katherine’s White Plains High School Counselor Guy Mathews and fellow Counselor Enrique Cafaro.

CW and Mayor Delfino have a long, collaborative relationship that goes back more than thirty years. Mayor Joe (as he likes to be called) has stated on many occasions, "I am all about the kids, about education, taking care of the younger members of our community."

In his speech, he said, “The young people have been my life…they truly are our future. I get emotional about our children. There’s nothing they couldn’t accomplish.” He added, “You couldn’t honor me more than to give a scholarship in my name to a student.”

Katherine Alleyene, who graduated from White Plains High School in 2002, was honored to be the first CW student to receive the award. “I was very surprised,” she said. “I didn’t know that I would actually receive something like that. I’m in the medical assisting program and would like to work in a hospital or clinic with doctors and nurses. Taking care of the sick is my main goal.”

Says Katherine’s older sister, Michelle, “Kathy is very motivated—when she gets her mind focused on something, she goes towards it, and she gets her goal, and she’s happy. She is also very giving and kind, and will be an asset to the community as she continues to grow in her career and in all her endeavors.” Two White Plains High School counselors were present to support Kathy as well.

Mary Magdalene Anyansi, Meira Terzian, Mezuan Ramjohn, and Sonia Crewe, recipients of other CW Foundation Scholarships were also in attendance. Rumana Rahman, another recipient, was not present.

Mary Magdalene, an accounting student who wants to be a CPA, was also very excited and surprised by her award. “It’s very exciting. I don’t think I’ve ever won a scholarship. I’m very happy.”

Various donors, including Camille’s Sidewalk Café Catering, Citibank, Doubletree Hotel Tarrytown, and Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival contributed items to the auction, which raised money for future scholarship. TD Bank generously hosted the event.
