The College of Westchester’s evening students helped raise over $400 by hosting a pizza and bake sale fundraiser to benefit the Hope for Ariang Foundation. The money raised will purchase three school desks (each desk sits three students) and much-needed school supplies for the Ariang School in Southern Sudan.
Students in Dr. Lilleston’s Transformative Learning class and Ms. Sinopoli’s Composition I class had attended a lecture given by Gabriel Bol Deng, Founder and Director of the Hope for Ariang Foundation, at White Plains High School on Wednesday, March 23 and were compelled to take action and make a difference in their global community.
After learning more about Mr. Bol Deng’s life and how in May 2007 he returned to Southern Sudan after 20 years to search for his family, a journey documented in the upcoming film, Rebuilding Hope, students were very excited about having the opportunity to assist in a global capacity, and help those students in Southern Sudan who are in dire need of school desks and supplies.
Altruistic endeavors such as this affords our students, our global community, our CW community, and ourselves, the broader learning experiences that are necessary to become true life-long learners.
