Students in two evening classes, Composition I and Transformative Learning, visited White Plains High School to hear a lecture about “Rebuilding Hope” and the Lost Boys of the Sudan.
The key speaker, Gabriel Bol Deng, one of about 20,000 Lost Boys of the Sudan, spoke about his life and screened his film, “Rebuilding Hope.” Mr. Deng fled Southern Sudan as a 10-year-old boy when Arab militiamen stormed through his village, Ariang. Documented in “Rebuilding Hope,” Deng returned to his war-torn home in 2007 to search for his family, rebuild Sudanese schools, and provide health services for local residents.
Students in both Ms. Loretta Sinopoli’s and Dr. Judith Lilleston’s classes are currently studying the themes, “risks and rebuilding,” and will continue to analyze and discuss the obstacles people face, and the hope and inspiration that often result from the most unusual circumstances.
