Students in Loretta Sinopoli’s Comp I and II classes visited the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase. They participated in docent-led tours of the new exhibition, The Deconstructive Impulse: Women Artists Reconfigure the Signs of Power, 1973-1991. This survey of leading women artists, which includes Cindy Sherman, Barbara Kruger and Carrie Mae Weems, takes apart and examines source material, generally borrowed from the mass media, to expose ways commercial images reveal the mechanisms of power. The students especially enjoyed Carrie Mae Weems “Untitled (Kitchen Table Series),” a collection of black and white photographs, which they analyzed and compared to a visual narrative.
This was definitely an enjoyable way to recognize the great achievements of women during Women's History Month.
