The Power of Visual Storytelling

English Composition I class had fun learning how to tell stories through photos. Prof. Michael Ryan gave a presentation titled “Introduction to Visual Storytelling,” where he explained how the famous phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words” is true, and how everybody can tell stories using photos the right way. Giving examples dating back to the Caveman to Ancient Egypt, and from Renaissance to the Great Depression, the students were highly engaged and receptive to the presentation.

The engagement reached its highest level when Prof. Ryan shared the nuts and bolts of visual storytelling in Action Comics and Graphic Novels. Some highlights of the presentation included the importance of storyboards, in addition to some basic aspects of photography. “It was a great experience being able to share my knowledge of visual storytelling and photographic techniques with students who might not otherwise be introduced to these concepts in their chosen course of study,” said Ryan.
