Breast Cancer Month – Awareness is Key

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Allied Health Club wanted to end the month on a positive note.  The Student Center was decorated with pink decorations as well as the traditional pink ribbon that represents breast cancer awareness. The event included food and items for sale, and a performance by the Just Dance Crew.

In addition, students were encouraged to take care of themselves as they heard the story of a breast cancer survivor, “For me, my annual mammogram was just taking the afternoon off from work. It meant nothing, until it happened…. I thought the worst; I thought about a mastectomy, my hair falling out, etc., but nothing like that happened… Early detection saved my life. Please do not miss a mammogram,” said Margie Ramos-Eng. Students were moved and inspired by Margie’s story and asked her several questions.

All the funds raised during the Breast Cancer Awareness event will go to the Susan G. Komen organization.  This is the only organization that addresses breast cancer on multiple fronts such as research, community health, global outreach and public policy initiatives in order to make the biggest impact against this disease.
